The Farmer, the Mousedeer and the Dog

Mr. Farmer went to the field happily while carrying his hoe on his shoulder. "I am going to check my cucumber field, perhaps I can harvest them tomorrow", he said to himself. What a surprise when he arrived in his field and saw what had happened, "What an unbelievable mess!" My cucumbers have been destroyed!, who has done it! With sad feeling, Mr. Farmer went home. He could only think what animal liked cucumber. "Yes! It must be "Si Kancil", the mousedeer", the farmer said. Mr. Farmer tried to look for a trick to trap the mousedeer. Then he had an idea to make a scare crow completed with very sticky glue. By the end of dusk, the scare crow had been ready and taken and set in the middle of the field.

I know the mousedeer is a smart animal, he will mock this scarecrow but let me see what is going to happen, the farmer thought. That's true, in the darkness of the night the smart mousedeer was coming toward the field. The mousedeer laughed to know there was a scare crow. "Just a scare crow, who is scared?" he said to himself.

Then the mousedeer came and passed the sticky doll, but his behaviour of rose. Ike hit the scare crow with his front legs. "Auch! Why have my legs stuck with it?" He cried surprisingly. The sticky glue laid on. it was so strong that he could not take his legs off. He could only cry all night long. The following day the farmer came around the corner carrying a bar of bamboo stick for beating. "Well, well, well, this is the trouble maker, I catch you now!"

"Forgive me Mr. Farmer, I didn't ruin your cucumber. I just ate two or three cucumbers". The mousedeer told a lie. But Mr. Farmer didn't trust him anymore. He bend the mousedeer and dragged him home. In the farmer's house, the mousedeer was put inside a chicken cage. "This stone is heavy enough, it is impossible for you to slip off, I am going to the market to buy spicy". "Please forgive me Mr. Farmer. don't eat me", the mousedeer cried. When Mr. Farmer was away to the market, there was a dog coming toward the cage.

"Hey Cil, why are you caged?", the dog asked him.

"I'll become a son in law of Mr. Farmer", the mousedeer answered. "Yes I am going to get married with his beautiful daughter", he added. "Where is Mr. Farmer now?" the dog asked. "He is shopping to prepare delicious food for a big party", the mousedeer exclaimed.

"It doesn't suit you. Your body is small. I will be better to replace you to become a son in law of Mr. Farmer", the dog said.

"No way, no way! go away dirty dog", the mousedeer pretended.

The dog suddenly groaming angrily. "If you don't want to be replaced now, I will push the stone on top of the cage and I will bite you and break your neck off, the dog said angrily.

"Easy boy ..., don't be like that. If you want it ... I will do what you want". The mousedeer now felt that he could trick the dog successfully.

The dog pushed the stone until it fell down off the cage. It made the mousedeer could lift and open it easily. The mousedeer got out of the cage then the dog got into the_, cage.

"Congratulation on your becoming Mr. Farmer's son in law", the mousedeer said and ran away satisfactorily.

A few minutes later, Mr. Farmer came, he was surprised to see the dog inside the cage instead of the mousedeer.

"My regard for you, my father in law, the dog said proudly", the mousedeer has given his right to me to become your son in law. I am the strongest and the most courageous dog in this village".

"Then, where is the mousedeer?" Mr. Farmer asked.

"He has gone to the jungle, Mr. Farmer. He is not suitable with your beautiful daughter. He is not handsome and he is not strong either, but I am", the dog replied.

"Do you want to become my son in law?" Mr. Farmer asked.

"Yes, Mr. Farmer", the dog answered happily.

"Now, get out of the cage then sit down sweetly, and close your eyes, I will call my daughter", Mr. Farmer said. The dog waited nervously, then Mr. Farmer came back not with his daughter but with a cudgel in his hand.

"This is a present for you", the farmer shouted angrily then hit the head and the back of the dog hard till it cried in pain. "Please forgive me, Mr. Farmer, what's wrong with me, please don't hit me like that" the dog ran away creaming.

Two Ducks (Angkus and Angma)

"Angkus" is a greedy duck, he is also boastfull, lazy and bad tempered. He is never kind to his fellow. Even with his own brother, "Angma". Once Angkus took and sold all the possession, the parents who had passed a way.

Contrary to Angkus, Angma is a young honest duck. He is dilligent, hard worker and very kind to others. He stayed alone in a simple life by looking for fire wood in the forest to sell.

One night, after working, he couldn't wait to sleep, while he was sleeping he dreamed about an old man. The old man ordered him to come to a cave in the forest. The old man also said that all of Angma's will were going to come true. When he was awake, he thought that he had to decide to do what the old man in his dream had asked him to do. Angma directly went to walk along in the forest and looked for the cave like it was in his dream.

"Well, this must be the cave like it was in my dream", he whispered. He walked toward the cave quickly and got into it.

It was very dark inside but suddenly he saw something shining not far from him. To his surprise, it was a water pitcher but shining like a diamond. "What is it? I have never seen something like it is before!", he said to himself.

Then he took it home. When he had been inside the house he was very hungry and thirsty after a long walk.

Later, Angma said slowly, "How happy I am when I have a lot of food, corn and fresh water in such a hot weather". Suddenly the water pitcher pro­duced sound strangely. It was miraculous!, the water pitcher produced some food. It came out from the water pitcher! It could deliver corn, fresh water and other from inside by saying words only!

Since then Angina's life became more wealthy. He just said some words then what he desired would come true because of the water pitcher.

Mean while, Angkus was suspious to see the wealth of his brother. He decided to find out what had made his brother wealthy in such a short time.

From a peep hole, Angkus finally knew what had happened to his brother. His bad behaviour rose again to see this, so that he decided to steal the water pitcher of his brother's. He would like to try to do like what his brother Angma had done.

No sooner had he put the water pitcher on the table than he said to it, "Hey water pitcher, you must give me some corn, fresh water and others".

What happened then, the water pitcher produced corn in a great amount! A great amount of corn and water came out from inside the magic water pitcher.

Angkus panicked to see it. The seed of corn flooded his house and broke everything. He screamed loudly and asked for help, "Help! help!", he shouted. Angma was sleeping when it happened but suddenly he was a waken up after hearing a loud voice from his brother's house.

Angma wake up, went to see what had happened. He broke the door of his brother's house then he was surprised to find his brother almost sink in a huge pile of corn seed and water.

Angkus was very shy to see his brother and after he was safe, Angkus said to his brother that he had stolen the water pitcher, but it reacted uncontrolably.

Finally Angkus apologized to Angma for being so greedy and jealous.

Rahou

 Once there were two sisters who, together with their servant girl, lived in northeastern Thailand. The servant's name was Rahou. She cleaned the sisters' house, washed their clothes, and sometimes she cooked for them.

Now these two sisters were very religious. They gave food to the monks each morning, and on special days they went to the temple to pray and give more food. They usually took Rahou along when they went to the temple, and sometimes they asked her to help them serve the monks.

One day, a very special day, the sisters set off for the temple very early in the morning. Rahou came along to carry the rice and curry. When they arrived at the temple, the sisters set their rice and curry on a long table.

Suddenly one of the sisters noticed that something was missing. "You have forgotten to bring the spoon for the rice," she said to Rahou. "Run home and get it silly girl."

Rahou ran home as fast as she could. She quickly found the rice spoon and ran back to the temple. By this time many people had come to the temple to give food to the monks. Rahou hurried through the crowd to the sisters.

"Back at last," said the sister. "But now I find that you have forgotten the spoon for the curry."

Once again Rahou ran home. She found the curry spoon and ran back to the temple. This time she ran even faster than sire had before. In fact^, she was quite out of breath when she found the sister again. They were both waiting for her. One of them snatched the spoon out of her hand, and the other one slapped her face.

"You are a lazy, stupid girl," said one of the sisters.

"You ruin all our good plans," said the other. "You foolish girl, I think you'd forget your own head if it weren't on your shoulders."

By this time, all the people at the temple were listening. The sisters were so angry that they forgot to speak quietly. The people began to laugh. They were laughing at Rahou, the silly servant girl.

Naturally Rahou was very upset. The sisters should not have shouted at her in the temple, in front of other people. She decided that one day she would find a way to punish the sis­ters.

Time passed, and first one sister, then the other, died. Be­cause they had been so good to the monks, the gods decided to reward them. The gods turned one sister into the sun, and the other became the moon. Even today we can see the two sisters in the sky, one in the daytime and the other at night.

Some time after the sisters died, Rahou died too. She too went to live in the sky, but she did not forget that the sisters had hurt her. Indeed, Rahou is still trying to punish the sisters.

She chases them across the sky, and sometimes she al­most catches one of them. When this happens, people say, "Rahou is trying to cat the sun," or "Rahou is trying to eat the moon," and they make a lot of noise to drive her away.

Next time you see an eclipse of the sun or moon, think of Rahou and the two sisters.
